Baptism at New Hope

Raised to New Life

What is Baptism?

Baptism is an outward expression of an inward decision to follow Jesus. It's a beautiful picture of the gospel—when you are immersed in water, it represents being buried with Christ; when you come up out of the water, it represents being raised to new life in Him (Romans 6:4).

Baptism doesn't save us—Jesus' sacrifice on the cross does—but it is an important step of obedience that shows the world you belong to Him.

At New Hope, We Believe:

  • Baptism is for anyone who has personally made the decision to put their faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior.
  • We baptize by immersion, just as Jesus was baptized (Matthew 3:16).
  • Baptism is a public declaration of faith and a step of obedience to Jesus' command (Matthew 28:19-20).
  • Baptism is both a burial and a resurrection (Romans 6:1-4).

Questions about Baptism

Baptism is for adults and elementary-aged kids who have personally made the decision to follow Jesus and understand what it means to put their faith in Him.

If you are a parent of a child who is interested in being baptized, we encourage you to talk with your child about their faith decision. Please also reach out to Barbee McVay, our Kids Ministry Director, below to meet with your family to help answer questions and walk alongside you.

No—you don't have to be baptized on a Sunday morning.

Baptism is a public declaration of faith, but that doesn't mean it must happen during a service in front of the congregation. At New Hope, we celebrate baptisms whenever someone is ready. That could be:

  • During a Sunday Service with the whole church family.
  • Immediately after service in a smaller, yet public setting.
  • During the week with a few close family and friends or with some members of our staff.

Our baptistery is always open. No matter when it happens, baptism is about your step of faith and your commitment to follow Jesus, and we would be honored to celebrate it with you.

Absolutely! Any of our staff would be honored to baptize you. However, if you have a family member or close friend who has played a significant role in your faith journey, we'd love for them to participate. The only requirement is that they have also been baptized. Just let us know who you would like to baptize you, and we'll make the arrangements!
We believe baptism is a decision you make after choosing to follow Jesus for yourself. If you were baptized as an infant but have since made your own personal commitment to Christ, we encourage you to consider baptism as a public declaration of your faith.
Our baptism team has everything ready for you! We provide clean, dark-colored shirts and shorts, undergarments, and towels—all you need to do is show up. You'll also receive a t-shirt and baptism box to take home as a keepsake.

If you would prefer to wear your own clothes, please choose a dark-colored shirt and shorts/pants or other modest clothing that you don't mind getting wet, and remember to bring a change of clothes.
